Documentary Filmmaking: Theory - Analysis - Practice
Year Program: September 10, 2010 - May 29, 2011
Semester Program: September 10 - December 18, 2010
The documentary film production program at Prague Film School aims at developing students’ story telling abilities through both intensive practical work and documentary film theory and analysis.
Documentary film has become one of the most powerful mediums of communication. On phenomenological grounds, it persuades through educating, moves through informing. For the creatively vigilant and social-minded, the discipline offers an immensely rewarding vocation. Now with the tools of the trade financially accessible to all, documentary production is limited only by the reservoir of ideas and story telling skills one has at his or her disposal.
Focus on Dramaturgy, Script Development, Cinematography, Editing
Story telling techniques are honed through the dramaturgy and documentary script development classes, drawing upon a rich pool of international and historical documentaries crossing themes and genres.
Aesthetic, technical and craft skills are inculcated through courses covering lighting, composition, camera movement, sound, and editing.
In addition to these core classes, Documentary Film Program students have to study 2-3 elective courses, covering such topics as Film History and Theory, Film Shot, Color Theory, Post-Production FX, and other.
Documentary Projects and Formats
Instruction and theory classes are based on intensive practice; every student will have to complete a series of documentary film projects or training exercises during the program.
The coursework will include a series of assigned topics (e.g. portrait of a person, analysis of a social/cultural issue, etc.), which will serve as practice and foundation for further production of individually selected topics for diploma films.
Formats used in the documentary film production program include DVCAM and HDV for camera work and Avid XPress HD or Composer for editing.
